The Milford’s Eagles Junior Midget and Junior Pee Wee football teams are Pop Warner football state champions.

The Southern Connecticut Pop Warner conference Junior Midget champs traveled to Watertown High School on Nov. 15  to take on the Northern Connecticut Pop Warner champions the Plainville Colts and won 26-8.

The Eagles dominated most of the game scoring four touchdowns and only allowing a touchdown early in the first quarter.

Milford opened up the game getting the football and went 70 yards, ending in a 37-yard touchdown run by Juan Reboria that put the Eagles up 6-0,. The two-point conversion kick went wide.

Plainville quickly came back on a three-play, 53-yard drive ending in a 12-yard touchdown catch-and-run tying the game. After successfully going for two, the Colts took an 8-6 lead.

Milford played rock solid defense from there on out.

The Milford offense was able to take advantage of that and put together a 52-yard, 10-play drive.

On the second play of the second quarter, Andrew Janik scored on a 1-yard run. The Eagles led 12-8. The two-point try again failed.

Later in the third quarter, the Eagles went 60 yards in 10 plays with Janik throwing a 23-yard touchdown pass to J.J. Cretella.

Deep in the fourth quarter, the Eagles put together another 60-yard drive ending in a 13-yard touchdown run to the corner of the end zone. After successfully making the two-point kick, Milford led 26-8.

The Eagle defense played great and held the Colts from getting a first down forcing them to punt. Milford was able to run out the clock by taking four consecutive knees to become state champions.

This is the second year in a row the Milford Eagles Junior Midget football team has won a state title, as head coach Dan Paul followed in the footsteps of last year’s head coach Kevin Barry.

The Eagles will play the Mount Hope Cowboys from Rhode Island in the New England Regional playoff game on Sunday, Nov. 22, at 2 p.m. at Veteran’s Field in West Haven.

This is the first of two games the Eagles need to win in order to qualify to go to Disney for the Pop Warner Super Bowl.

They hope to join the Milford Pee Wee cheerleaders, who are the New England regional champions, and Midget Cheerleaders, who have also qualified to go to Disney.

The Milford Eagles Junior Pee Wee team, led by head coach Larry McNellis, won its second consecutive state title this past weekend with a 44-12 victory over the Brookfield Bobcats.

They have two regional games to win in their quest to play in the Pop Warner Super Bowl in Disney. They play Mount Hope on Sunday at 10 a.m. at Veteran’s Field in West Haven.

The team is led on offense by running back’s Patrick Coughlin, Max Dempsey, Ryan McNellis and Wes Buzzelle. The offensive line is led by center Michael Deveny, guard Rual Valle and power tackle Jimmy Cobain.

Defensively, the team is led by defensive tackles Ryan Mendola and Joey Sansone, defensive ends Kyle Pokornowski and Chris Engel.

Also, playing big roles on defense in the win over Brookfield were Brandon Huchinson, Sammy Constantini and Lito Valle.

The Eagles of Milford are looking to make a second trip to The Pop Warner Super Bowl held at the Wide World of Sports Complex in Disney World.
