St. Peter’s Episcopal Church School is underway again this year, having started Sept. 13 during the 10 a.m. service.
The Rev. Cynthia Knapp, priest-in-charge, said the program for ages 3 to grade 5 is so enjoyed by the children that “parents have told me their kids lead the charge to go to church every Sunday.”
The children come to church with their families and are brought up to class by their teachers following the brief “Children’s Message” given by Knapp at the start of the service. They are brought back to church in time to have Communion with their families.
Bible stories are taught different ways depending on age and grade level.
Those age 3 to first grade learn a Bible story using wooden figures and sets. After being taught the story they are able to play with the story set and do related activities or crafts. Children in grades 2 to 5 learn through a curriculum called “Faith Weaver Now” by Group Publishing. Knapp explained, “It’s a Bible-based curriculum designed for them to grow in their faith and in their knowledge of God’s Word.”
Both classes study the Old Testament in the fall and shift to the New Testament for winter and spring.
Each class, one for age 3 to first grade, the other for grades 2 to 5, is taught by a team of two teachers, many of whom teach professionally in the local school system.
For those too young for church school, from infant to pre-school age, there is childcare conducted by a head teacher and an assistant. The head teacher has a degree in special education and also has Red Cross and Safe Church certification.
Following the church school years is the youth program split into two levels, one for grades 6 to 8, the other 9 to 12. Both meet evenings on the first and third Sundays. Both groups go on a week-long mission trip in the summer where they join with other youth groups to help those in need and to build their own faith through teaching and worship times.
