The Foran High baseball team played a doubleheader at Cheshire High School on Saturday, losing 10-3 in game one and 7-0 in game two to fall to 2-6 on the season. Cheshire improved to 5-3 with the victories.
“It’s very up and down right now,” said Foran coach Garrett Walker. “We’re still searching for the right combinations of players so we can put our best product on the field.
“We did a lot of good things today that aren’t going to show up on the scoreboard We hit the ball hard. We had some scoring opportunities. Cheshire is a good ball club they made some good plays on us.”
In game two, Josh Mixie led the Lions going 2-for-4 on two singles while Nick Tuozzola went 1-for 3 with a single.
The Lions left nine men on base in the 7-0 loss. Three Cheshire Rams each had two RBIs; Adam Von Fischer, Rich Mills and Ben DeLaubell. Altrin Kabashi hit a home run.
The Rams got on the board in the opening frame when Cooper Mrowka hit a one-out single and Ryan Pierpont followed with a single.
Von Fischer drove them both of them in to give Cheshire a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the first, Mixie led off with a single but Colin Firmender ground into a double-play to clear the bases.
After the first inning outburst, Foran hurler Andrew Corsi settled down and threw three scoreless innings. The Lions could not capitalize at the plate, as they didn’t get a hit through those three frames.
Foran put two men on base in the fourth on back-to-back walks. Tuozzola then laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to put Firmender and R.J. Jackson in scoring position. But with the tying runs on base, Miike Bevino flew out to right and Mike Howell struck out.
In the fifth inning, the Rams opened up the game.
Kabashi led off with a home run then Jason Strollo doubled, Mrowska reached on a fielder’s choice and Pierpont singled to load the bases.
Mills then hit a two-run double, scoring Strollo and Mrowska. DeLaubell then doubled in Pierpont and Mills to make it a 7-0 game.
The Lions put two men on in the fifth and sixth innings but could not get them across the plate.
In the fifth, Rob Lynch reached on a dropped third strike and Mixie singled with two outs before Firmender ground out to second to end the inning.
In the sixth, Jackson walked and Tuozzola singled but Bevino ground into a 1-4-3 double play to end the threat.
Dylan Bartel relieved Corsi in the sixth and seventh and allowed one hit and struck out two.
“We have a lot of guys on this team that can do a lot of good things on the baseball field,” Walker said.
“My job as a coach is to put them in a position to succeed. We went with one lineup the first game, we did okay, then we went with a different lineup in the second game, gave some new guys some opportunities and see who wants to step up to the plate.”
