Drug charges were lodged Dec. 18 against a West Haven man who reportedly hid marijuana in his buttocks, police said.

The incident took place at 10:30 p.m. on Wheelers Farms Road near Honeycomb Lane.

While on anti-crime patrol the Milford Police Narcotics Unit observed suspicious activity in a parking lot near Plains Road and the Boston Post Road, according to a police report.

Detectives later conducted a motor vehicle stop near Wheelers Farms Road and the passenger, Linval Dillon, 31, of West Haven, was observed trying to conceal an unknown item on his body and would not comply with detectives when he was told to show his hands, police said.

Detectives used Cedar, the department’s trained narcotics detection K9, to search the vehicle and Dillon. Police said Cedar alerted to the buttocks area of Dillon, where detectives recovered 11 bags of marijuana packaged for resale. Dillon also had 14 bags of heroin in his pocket, police said.

Dillon was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana with the intent to sell, possession of heroin, possession of heroin with the intent to sell, and interfering with police officers.

Bond was set at $10,000 and Dillon was scheduled to appear in court Jan. 12.

Milford Hall of Fame books $10 at Milford Bank

$

The last remaining copies of the Milford Hall of Fame’s 375th Anniversary Commemorative booklet are on sale for $10 at all The Milford Bank branches until they are gone.

All told, 36 of the city’s most notable and famous are featured in a 68-page booklet published in late 2014 upon the occasion of the city of Milford’s 375th anniversary of its founding.

From the 17th century’s Paugussett Indian Chief Ansantawae and the settlement’s first Colonial era pastor, the Rev. Peter Prudden – to Helen Langner, Joseph Foran and Winthrop “Pink” Smith, the latter all prominent citizens of the 20th century, the booklet captures the flavor of life and the personalities during Milford’s nearly four centuries of existence.

The story is told of how “a most appealing land with a brook and good harbor” was noticed by eventual settler Thomas Tibbals while he and others were pursuing the fleeing Pequot tribe members during the Pequot War in 1637, two years prior to Milford’s settlement in 1639 by the Rev. Prudden and his followers.

Readers will learn of William Fowler’s first mill; the extra allotment of land granted to the widow Martha Beard; the settlement’s first doctor, Jasper Gunn; the Rev. Samuel Andrew who fathered 10 children; and, two men in the early Colonial years, Robert Treat and Jonathan Law, who would eventually become colonial governors of Connecticut.

Then there’s the well-known story of Capt. Stephen Stow, who died helping victims of smallpox put ashore by the British in Milford in 1776, and that of Private Joseph Plumb Martin, who served in Gen. George Washington’s army in good times (Yorktown) and bad (the winter at Valley Forge).

And reminiscent of Paul Revere’s famous ride a few years earlier, there’s the story of Abigail Ann Merwin who, while hanging laundry, observed a British raiding party aiming to capture cattle and pigs hidden in Calf Pen Meadow and who hitched her wagon and with her baby under arm “raced into town banging on a copper pot to raise the alarm.”

There’s also a story on noted 18th century diarist John Downs.

Milford has had its share of explorers and inventors, too, with Peter Pond’s explorations of the west rivaling that of the more famous Lewis and Clark expedition. George Willard Coy is credited as the inventor of the telephone switchboard and Frank Julian Sprague worked with Thomas Edison.

Of course, submarine inventor Simon Lake of Milford needs no further introduction.

Milford was home to George Bird Grinnell, the “Father of Conservation,” and noted historian Edward Lambert, who authored the history of New Haven colony including Milford. Short stories on philanthropists Mary Hepburn Smith, who deeded the Maple Street duck pond land to the town, and Henry Augustus Taylor (Lauralton Hall, Taylor building and Mary Taylor Methodist Church) are included.

The booklet also features stories on Milford’s Civil War “Medal of Honor” winners George William Baird and Charles H. Marsh; motion picture and business mogul Sylvester Z. Poli, whose unique estate still stands in Woodmont; oyster cultivation innovator William Merwin, and a seed cultivator of another kind, E. B. Clark.

Milford’s educational history is also told, with stories on Fannie Elizabeth Beach, Herbert Mathewson and Joseph Foran.

The booklet is the brainchild of MHOF founder Jerry Patton, a local businessman and former state legislator, and the culmination of now seven years of official existence for the group, which since 2008 has conducted an annual “induction ceremony” each Fall where five historically significant personages from the city’s past are formally placed into the Milford Hall of Fame, currently located in the Parsons complex.

Dakota Neumon stands beside her award-winning art.

Milford artist Dakota Neumon, 20, has been busy lately.

In the month of November her painting “My Poppy” was accepted into the American Artist Professional League’s 87th Grand National Show at the Salmagundi Club in New York City.

There were more than 5,000 entries and only 250 were accepted.

Also in November, Neumon’s painting “Luna” won first place, awarded by the juror Andre Rochester, in the Milford Firehouse Art Gallery’s exhibit “Fur, Feathers, and Scales.”

Neumon recently completed a live figure model class, under the mentoring of nationally known artist Claudia Post, and she is currently studying academic fine art and realism under Post.

Neumon also completed a commission of a married couple, titled ‘Our Remembrance’ and is currently working on another commission of a dog, a German shepherd.

Elks’ Free Throw Championship ages 9-14

It may be cold outside, but your kids can still be active and have fun by joining in a foul-shooting contest. The annual Free Throw Championship will take place in the Saint Mary School gym from 1:30 p.m. until about 3:30 p.m., Jan. 17.

It is held by the Knights of Columbus, and all boys and girls in Milford from ages 9 to 14 are welcome to come.

Participants are asked to arrive at the school lobby at 1 p.m. on the day of the event to register. There is not a registration fee, and if they wish to register in advance, they can contact the chairman of the event, Steve Fenton. Fenton has been part of this organization for about five years, and in 2013 he became a Fourth Degree Knight, which is the highest degree.

The Grand Knight, Adam Baranowsky will be at this basketball competition as well to help with the rebounds, scores, and to sign participation certificates that will be given to the children. A parent or guardian must be present to sign a form upon arrival. All the players’ shots will be calculated, and the kids will be separated into groups based on their ages.

The winners from each age group will earn a trophy or plaque. Free drinks and small snacks will also be given.

“It’s beneficial to the Knights of Columbus because they’re working with our youth in the parochial school. It’s a good way for both groups to get to know each other,” said Fourth Degree Knight, Kevin Boyd.

Those who win this competition can advance to higher levels that start at the districts then go on to regional, state and finally the national championship.

The forms the players receive on Jan. 17 will proceed with them if they continue onto these higher levels. Those who qualify for the national championship do not even have to leave Connecticut.

“By hosting and supporting this basketball free throw competition we are letting kids and their parents be a part of a fun, free event where everyone can enjoy themselves for a little while,” said Baranowsky. “The kids can participate in a low-pressure, fun competition against their friends and other children in the community.”

This basketball event has been sponsored by the Knights of Columbus since 1972, but this is their council’s third year of doing s

. According to Fenton, the Santa Maria Council is part of The Knights of Columbus and began about seven years ago at Saint Mary’s Church. The Knights do other forms of volunteering like helping out at the Saint Mary’s Parish picnic and the school carnival. The organization gives many people the opportunities to help others.

“Being a part of the Knights of Columbus is great. For me, being able to be a part of events or fundraisers where your actions or the proceeds from it directly help people who may need it is just awesome,” said Baranowsky.

Fenton said: “I enjoy being involved in a great organization like the Knights of Columbus. Anytime you do volunteer work it makes you feel good.”
