Among the standouts for the Milford Fencing Club at a recent High School Competition (l-r) were: Isabela Roldan, James Thomas, Madeline Turiano and Melissa Kross.
In only its first season, the Milford High School Fencing Club recently fielded five fencers in its first-ever High School Competition held at Guilford High.
Competing against more than 100 fencers from all over the state, Milford fencers Melissa Kross (Jonathan Law), Isabela Roldan (Law), Madeline Turiano (Foran High), James Thomas (Law) and Dan Williams (Foran) made fine debuts in multiple bouts in front of a crowd numbering in the hundreds.
Placing highest for Milford was Turiano in the Women’s Foil Division and Thomas in the Men’s Foil.
After a full morning of challenging competition and very close bouts, all of Milford’s fencers qualified for the second round, a remarkable achievement for the first year of competitive fencing at the High School level.
Coach Mark Kissinger said, “Every bout was very close, and win or lose, our High School fencers displayed the highest levels of sportsmanship, poise and tenacity.
“This being only our inaugural season, we have 26 great kids in the club on which to build a solid base for future years, and we look forward to the state championships in March.”
