Howes on Broad Street has been a Milford pharmacy for 104 years.

Howes on Broad Street has been a Milford pharmacy for 104 years.

Howes Drug & Medical, located at 78 Broad Street on the green in Milford, will celebrate a grand re-opening with a ribbon cutting on Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 11 a.m. This year marks 104 years of service to the community for Howes. The event, which is free to attend, will offer refreshments, giveaways and other in-store specials.

Mayor Benjamin Blake will assist in the celebration. Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro will make a presentation commemorating Howes’ history and contributions to the local community. She will present a plaque to pharmacist and owner, Raymond Pantalena, Jr., honoring the occasion. With a staff of more than 15 local employees currently, it’s the store’s tradition of excellent customer service throughout the years that Pantalena and others say have led to the business’ continued success.

In early 2015, Howes Drug & Medical was completely remodeled to update the pharmacy and use the space more efficiently. The store features a larger, walk-in full service pharmacy area, pharmacy consultation desks, and a home medical equipment and surgical supplies showroom. Prescriptions can be filled while customers shop or delivered to their home at no extra charge. Howes accepts most insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. An expanded selection of gift items and chocolates has also been added. The company offers free gift wrapping on any gift purchase.

“We wanted to continue to foster the great relationship with the local community that Howes Drug & Medical has enjoyed for so long,” said Pantalena. “We are an independent and locally-owned Health-Mart pharmacy offering the kind of personal service, unexpected conveniences, and trusted advice you can count on from an independent pharmacy. As a local business owner, I care about the community as well as our patients and want to provide an unparalleled level of care and counseling. Caring for you and about you is what Howes Drug & Medical does every day,” he added.

Founded in 1911, Howes Drug & Medical is one of the oldest pharmacies in Connecticut. With over 100 years in business, it is a familiar landmark and a part of Connecticut’s history. Originally owned by John T. Howes, the store was always in Milford’s center but located a few blocks from its present location. In 1951 Howes Drug & Medical moved to its current location on the green at 78 Broad Street.
