Retail 101, a fundraiser for Jonathan Law High School’s Model UN group, will take place at the school Oct. 30 to Nov. 1.

Kelsey Burns, advisor, said the Model UN Club is an academic club that requires students to dedicate copious amounts of time, effort and enthusiasm over the course of the school year in preparation for an international conference in New York City held every March.

“The International Model United Nations educates young people about global issues through simulation,” Burns said. “The Model UN fosters the next generation of globally-minded leaders by facilitating cross-cultural debate and exchange programs. Through this opportunity our Model UN students are equipped with the academic and social skills necessary to solve some of the world’s most pressing international issues.”

Students work collaboratively with peers, and research and debate current international issues, craft position papers that are then edited by Model UN staff, and spend four days in New York City advocating for and defending their positions.

At the 2015 conference, the Jonathan Law High School members represented the country of Sweden by engaging in over 16 hours of debate, discourse and eventually compromise to propose resolutions within their committees, Burns said. Students sit on various committees and represent issues such as global warming, genocide, world health crises, economic sanctions, and tackle any issue the actual United Nations would.

This year Jonathan Law is returning to the conference.

The fundraiser is an opportunity for discount shopping provided by the group Retail 101. Beginning on Oct. 30 at 2:30 p.m. Retail 101 will occupy the old gym at Jonathan Law High School, offering deeply discounted men’s and women’s clothing items for sale. All sales are between $5 and $15 for name brand clothing.

Hours for the three-day sale are as follows: Friday, Oct. 30, 2:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturday, Oct. 31, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Sunday, Nov. 1, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cash and all major credit cards will be accepted.
