The Boys Choir from Trinity Church On-the-Green, New Haven, will sing at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 71 River Street, Milford at 5 p.m. October 25. Three Milford boys are set to sing to a hometown congregation when the 130-year-old Boys Choir from Trinity Church On-the-Green, New Haven, sings at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 71 River Street, at 5 p.m. October 25: They are Zane and Mead Franz, and Ramsey Scott.
Admission is free, but a free-will donation to the choir will be welcome.
Both Franz brothers attend Foote School in New Haven where Mead, 8, is in third grade and joined the choir in September while Zane, 13, in eighth grade, joined when he was nine years old. Both are parishioners of St. Peter’s.
“I saw them sing the last time they were at St. Peter’s in [2010] and said I want to do that too,” said Zane. “I think it’s very cool that we’re going back to St. Peter’s and to see a lot of people I know. We learn a ton of music, never the same song twice. Most songs are in English but some are in Latin so I do well in Latin at school.”
Zane has traveled with the choir to sing in Washington D.C. and New York City. The choir plans to go to Montreal next summer and England the summer after that.
The 16-member choir sings the high notes of a song in the treble range and membership usually goes up to eighth grade or until the voice changes.
The Boys Choir sings with the Men and Boys Choir at Trinity where there is also a Men and Girls Choir and a regular Parish Choir.
The type of presentation the choir will be part of Oct. 25 is Evensong, an Evening Prayer service dating back to the Middle Ages involving both readings by lay readers and songs by the choir. There are also newer songs that are sung prayers as well as traditional hymns.
The choir, made up of boys from the Greater New Haven area, rehearses twice a week and gathers for dinner Friday nights with meals prepared by parents. Ramsey Scott is also a Milford resident in the choir but not a St. Peter’s parishioner.
Boys and girls wishing more information about the programs at Trinity may go to a recruitment table during a reception in the parish hall after the service.
