Fred DeLuca, co-founder and CEO of Subway Restaurants, died Monday, September 14, 2015 at the age of 67, just weeks after celebrating the chain’s 50th anniversary.
DeLuca and his business partner, Dr. Peter Buck, opened their first submarine sandwich shop in Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1965 when DeLuca was only 17 years old.
DeLuca leaves behind his wife, Elisabeth DeLuca; son, Jonathan DeLuca; granddaughter, Sofia DeLuca; sister, Suzanne Greco and her husband Gary; nieces, Gabriella and Jacqueline; and members of his extended family — the thousands of team members that make up the Subway brand all over the world.
He was always very proud of the work of his Headquarters staff and thousands of developers, franchisees, Sandwich Artists, suppliers and partners who he often and affectionately called “The Greatest Team in Franchising History”.
Cody-White Funeral Home, 107 Broad St., Milford, handled arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established and will be administered by Rockridge Capital LLC. The donations in Fred’s memory will support programs that foster education through scholarships, and to help feed the hungry. Checks should be made to Rockridge Capital LLC and mailed to Rockridge 300 Subway, Milford, CT 06461.
