The 1965 Class from Jonathan Law High School is planning its 50th reunion.
The class was the first freshman class when Jonathan Law opened on Sept. 6, 1961.
“We were the first class to complete four years and graduate from the new JLHS,” said Nancy Wiggins Zellner.
The class has been a very close one, reunion organizers said, holding class reunions every five years since the first that was held at the Knights of Columbus on Bridgeport Avenue in Devon.
The mayor will issue a proclamation dedicating Oct. 2, 3, 4 to the class, the weekend of the class reunion. Classmates from 21 states will attend, plus the first international exchange student who came to Jonathan Law for the students’ senior year will be coming from Helsinki, Finland.
More than 55 classmates still live in Milford, Zellner said.
“Our class numbered approximately 300,” Zellner added. “Thirty seven in the class have passed on. We located and sent invitations to over 200. We have nearly 90 classmates attending the weekend long celebration. The celebration includes a tour of the current Jonathan Law High School on Saturday morning, Oct. 3, at 10 a.m. graciously hosted by the principal, Mr. Fran Thompson, and student volunteers. We have nearly 50 classmates attending this. They are all excited.”
A few interesting facts on the class include the history they witnessed: The election of President John F. Kennedy; the assassination of President John F. Kennedy; the Cuban Missile Crisis; the first American in space; Dr. Martin Luther King and the march on Washington; widespread racial tension, rioting and murder; the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King; Cold war and the resignation of Nikita Kruschev; the war in Viet Nam.
“Over 40 served in the military during that time and we will be honoring them at the reunion,” Zellner said. “We had one classmate, Martin Diamond — whose parents ran Diamond Hardware in Walnut Beach for many, many years — win a Purple Heart.”
