It was quite an accomplishment for those who laced up the running shoes and completed the Faxon Law Group Fairfield Half Marathon on June 28.
For some runners, including Milford’s Sean Hanson, participating in the race was about more than just personal best times and crossing the finish line.
Hanson ran in support of OutRun38, a charity organization, promotes fitness and healthy living in a supportive community to heighten awareness of Cystic Fibrosis.
The annual 13.1-mile race drew runners who represented a variety of charitable events; and participants and sponsors raise hundreds of thousands of dollars, annually for organizations.
“It’s a great event for the community — Fairfield and the entire shoreline,” said Hanson, who ran the course in a time of 2:03.53. He placed 1,596th overall among nearly 3,000 participants.
The race was won by Ethiopia’s Gosa Girma Tefera, who completed the course in 1:04.05. The top female was Etaferahu Temesgen, also of Ethiopia, who completed the run in 1:14.09 and placed 11th overall.
The course begins and finishes at Jennings Beach, and winds through the downtown Fairfield streets, through Southport, and along the water in spots.
This year’s cool, 60-something degree conditions made for ideal running weather for participants.
“It was a great course. The weather was perfect today,” Hanson said.“The weather was perfect for running. … It just helps with keeping your body cool.”
As scenic as the course may be, it’s not exactly easy. “The hills are always a bear,” Hanson points out.
Hanson, 40, runs 15-20 miles per week and has run in half marathons before. “Being around a lot of healthy people,” is what he enjoys most about running these long, grueling races.
Meghan Garland was Milford’s fastest finisher, completing the course in 1:37.46, and placing 225th overall.
Rob Borges placed 309th, as he came across the finish line in 1:40.33; Nathan Owens was 326th in 1:41.13; Larry Plunkett was 427th in 1:44.09; Jeff Queiroga was 440th in 1:44.19; Jack Sirotnik placed 484th in 1:45.15; Jacqueline Torres placed 682nd in 1:48.49.
Faxon 5K
Jorge Lopes, 32, came in 14th and was Milford’s fastest runner in the Faxon Law Group’s 5K race, also held at Jennings Beach, on Saturday. Lopes finished the run in a time of 18:23.
Nick Blanchard, 20, from Portland was first overall with a time of 15:58. Tim Milenkevich, 33, of Ansonia, was second (16:18) followed by Luke McCambley, 25, of Westport (16:31).
Liz Campbell, 24, of Stamford, placed first in the women’s division with a time of 17:53; Trumbull’s Kate Romanchick, 16, was second in 19:26; and Julie McElroy, 48, of Sleepy Hollow N.Y. was third (19:34).
