Girl Scouts Silver and Gold Awardees made their way to the state Capitol on Wednesday, April 29, for the event “Lunch with Your Legislator,” where they met with their local legislators, took a tour of the Capitol, and heard from several key elected officials.
The Silver Award is the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette, ages 11 to 14, can earn. Girls can receive this award after making a substantial impact in their communities. The Gold Award is the highest and most prestigious award that Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors, ages 14 to 18, can earn. Each Gold Award project addresses a community issue and improves lives. Through earning their Silver or Gold Awards, Girl Scouts enhance their leadership skills and take action to make the world a better place.
The event, which was coordinated by Rep. Michelle Cook and included Lt. Governor Nancy Wyman meeting and speaking with the girls about the importance of being women leaders. Wyman said that women still have a long way to go, and it is up to the younger generations to make those strides.
“You’re the future leaders,” Wyman said. “Make sure to get yourselves out there and push for who you really want to be and do what you believe is right. Speak out for what you believe in and fight for what you want. You’re part of Girl Scouts of Connecticut — there can’t be a better family out there to support you.”
“This was a wonderful opportunity for our girls to not only see our state Capitol, but also meet women who are powerful, influential leaders,” said Mary Barneby, CEO of Girl Scouts of Connecticut. “It also gave our legislators and representatives the opportunity to meet our Girl Scouts and see how committed the girls are to making the world a better place.”
At the end of the day, Girl Scouts were able to pin legislators and elected officials as members of Girl Scouts of Connecticut. Members of the Honorary Troop at the Capitol included Rep. Pam Staneski from Milford.
