The 55th anniversary of the Casey-O’Brien New Haven County Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Scholar Athlete dinner was held on April 10.
Jarrod Butts from Jonathan Law was one of 27 high school and prep school scholar athletes honored for academic excellence, leadership and citizenship.
“We have another outstanding group of young men the we are honoring this year”, said Bill O’Brien chapter president. “All they have achieved on the field and in the classroom should make their family, school and community very proud.”
Other award winners included acclaimed actor Dan Lauria a former SCSU all conference linebacker, who in the 2010-2011 season did more than 275 performances of Vince Lombardi the legendary coach of the Green Bay Packers in the Broadway production of the play ‘Lombardi.”
He also appeared in over seventy television episodic programs and more than twenty Movie of the Week productions. He is most recognized as Jack, the dad in the highly acclaimed Emmy winning ABC television show ‘The Wonder Years.”
Also recognized were former coach Paul Sponheimer of Seymour, who received the Chapter Award of Merit for his many years of service to the chapter, Anthony Sagnella of North Branford, the head coach at North Haven who received the Coach of the Year Award, and Bill Schule of Hamden a well regarded football official who received the Official Recognition Award as selected by the New Haven Football Officials Association.
A state championship award was presented to Xavier High School from Middletown for winning the Class LL championship in December.
