Teams are invited to participate in a Crossbows and Catapult Launch hosted by Lauralton Hall on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 12:30 p.m.
The back field of Lauralton Hall’s campus will be transformed into an enormous launching pad in support of breast cancer awareness. This event is open to all ages. Prizes and raffles will be awarded.
“The objective of building our own catapult to launch a pumpkin is to connect the physics of circular motion, forces, and projectile motion and combine it with a hands-on project,” said Theresa Napolitano, science department chair. “The kids have a blast, while they are learning at the same time.”
Teams, groups and individuals are invited onto the Lauralton Hall campus for a day of launching gourds and pumpkins via catapults or crossbows.
Each team will design and create an original apparatus according the specifications provided. Pumpkins and gourds to be launched should be weighed and decorated, as each team sees fit, to achieve maximum distance.
There will be awards for: Most creative (teams that have the best theme for their crossbow/catapult), best launch (each launch will result in points determined by combination of weight and distance to impact) as well as many raffle prizes.
Event registration is $20 per team. The launching begins at 12:30 and there will be three divisions: High School Division, Middle School Division plus an Open Division.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease. In recognition of this, all proceeds from the event will go to the Get in Touch Foundation and the Norma F. Pfriem Breast Cancer Center in Bridgeport.
