At the Milford Oyster Festival Aug. 17, the Milford Historic Society will present a reenactment of the day in 1639 when the founders came from New Haven by boat and by foot to build a settlement.

A Tall Ship will tie up at the floating dock next to the boating ramp in the harbor. Colonial docents will come off the boat with provisions and lumber.

Others will walk down the trail road in Wilcox Park and join up with them in the boat ramp parking area. Then, together, they will cross the foot bridge to the parking area next to the Coast Guard building where they will spend the day re-enacting the lives of the early settlers, including the building of a four-by-six post and peg house and the “twig and turf” ceremony in which the settlers purchased the land from Ansantawae, a sachem of the Paugusset Indians.

During the day, docents will portray city founders. Some of the portrayers will be the direct descendent of the person they are portraying.
