Milford’s best recognized by Umpire’s Association

The Milford Umpires Association, a member of the Amateur Softball Association of America (ASA), recently awarded eight college scholarships, made possible through the collection of team fees from the local ASA adult slow-pitch softball tournaments.
John Casey, Naagma Timakondu, Lucy Weissauer and Nick Weissauer from Foran High, and John Lawless, Nicole Postighone, Dllon Rocha and Jocelyn Travis from Jonathan Law were this year’s recepients.
“We congratulate the recipients, and wish them the best in their future studies,” said Russell Pasacreta, president of the Milford Umpires Association.
“It’s very gratifying to award these scholarships. In addition to their athletic and academic achievements, these young people have distinguished themselves by serving the community in ways that are too numerous to mention. We salute them all.”
Casey, who will attend Fordham University, is a CAPT Scholar, an Eagle Scout for the Boy Scouts of America, and was on the soccer, track and field and basketball teams.
Timakondu, who will attend the University of Connecticut, is a CAPT Scholar, an Honor Guard member, and a four-year member of the tennis team, where she was a senior captain.
Lucy Weissauer,  who will attend the University of Connecticut, was a senior captain on the Lions’ volleyball, basketball and softball squads. A member of the National Honor Society, she was an All-SCC Scholar Athlete.
Nick Weissauer, who will attend Muhlenberg College in Pennsylvania, is a CAPT Scholar and recipient of the Michael’s Leadership Award. An All-State wide receiver, he was a two-year captain of the football team.
Lawless, who will attend Drexel University in Philadelphia, is a CAPT Scholar, an Eagle Scout, and ran both indoor and outdoor track. He holds the school record in the 55 meter hurdles.
Postighone, is enrolled at Loyola University. She ran track, is a CAPT Scholar and a Keyette.
Rocha, who will attend the University of New Haven, earned more than 2,000 honors in community service. He was a four-year member of the baseball team and was a senior captain.
Travis,  who will attend the University of Connecticut, is a CAPT Scholar, a Natural Helper, and a four-year member of the band, where she played the flute, the guitar and percussion.
In addition to funding these annual scholarships, the Milford Umpires Association also donates to the local Toys for Tots campaign and the Milford Food Bank.
The Association has 26 members, who provide umpiring services to the City of Milford’s Recreation Department, as well as state and national softball tournaments.
