The Planning and Zoning Board voted recently to accept the recommendation made at the June 26 meeting of the Board of Fire Commissioners to remove two retired fire stations from city ownership. The Board of Aldermen is expected to vote on the recommendation at its Aug. 5 meeting.
When approved by the aldermen, the city will offer for sale the former Fire Station Number 6 at 204 Melba Street. The building is 5,500 square feet and is on half an acre of land. The city plans to donate the former Fire Station Number 5 at 128 Kings Highway to the Borough of Woodmont for use as a borough hall. The building is 5,400 square feet, on 2.25 acres of land.
The former fire stations have been replaced by the new East Side Fire Station, 980 New Haven Avenue, which opened in April. The new facility is 12,000 square feet, larger than the combined size of the two mothballed fire stations.
